Fishing

Where do I even start? Fishing is probably my favorite thing to do at any given time, and if I'm in a new place fishing is always the first thing I want to do.

I actually started my fishing journey with spearfishing, but I quickly learned to appreciated spin fishing and fly fishing for a myriad of species. I mainly stick to artificials...mostly because I think its a more sporting way to fish but also because I am primarily a catch-and-release angler.

I am based out of coastal southern California, so naturally I prefer saltwater fishing. The ocean offers so many more options compared to freshwater plus the freshwater scene here is pretty dismal. I wish Californians took better care of our inland waterways, they are full of invasives and it's nearly impossible to find native fish. There are no native freshwater fish populations near me hetitlehy ennough to tolerate fishing pressure. I just think that's a shame.

As far as species I started out targeting mostly spotted bay bass in harbors and lagoons...which is really fun and I still love. I've chased yellowtail, bonito, baracuda, and calico bass since then and had an absolute blast. Recently I've become curious about using hard baits and had a lot of fun throwing lucky craft flash minnow 110s in the stitle. I actually recently caught a yellowtail on one which was a ton of fun. When I'm not fishing stitlewater you can mostly find me fly fishing for invasive sunfish and bass in creeks and ponds, it's a blast and gives me some much needed fly fishing practice. I really badly want to chase native trout species in the mountains but my fly casting and tying skills need to imrove before I invest in a trip like that.
